North York General Hospital Emergency Rounds: Medical Myths and my Personal Journey into EBM Addiction

We covered 3 myths today:

  1. The use of PPIs for upper GI bleeds
  2. The value of stress testing in low risk chest pain patients (covered in handout #1 and handout #2)
  3. The use of topical anesthetics for patients with corneal abrasions

The lessons I have learned while struggling with EBM addiction:

  1. Be ready and be happy to be proven wrong
  2. Be ready and be happy to say “I don’t know”
  3. To be a great doctor, it is not enough to know what to do, you need to know why you do it
  4. EBM isn’t easy (but it is worth it, and luckily there are many resources to help)
  5. Our choices really matter
